Oceans 8 is about Debbie Ocean, a con woman who spends five years in prison after her last kerfuffle with robbery. Once she is released, she assembles a team of other skilled women in order to set up and fulfill a heist plan that is incredibly fine-tuned to the point where she will be surprised if it doesn't succeed. Her plan is to steal a 150 million dollar necklace called the "Toussaint" while it is being worn at the Met Gala by a well-known celebrity.

I haven't seen any of the other Oceans' movies so I didn't know what to expect going in. I knew the general plotline of the other three movies, but I still went in with an open mind. As far as the story goes, its nothing you haven't seen before. All it really is is the first Oceans movie, but rehashed with female actresses. It's a typical heist movie that doesn't really expand the Oceans series and instead relies on the gender swap alone to sell originality. Most of the female cast is enjoyable to watch, but some of the group members aren't really that interesting. Sure they contribute, but their characters turn out as one dimensional in the end. Also, throughout the entire movie, there are only seven members and the whole time I was wondering where the eighth member was. She comes in the last like 25 minutes of the movie and her motivations for doing are completely flip-floppy and don't make a whole lot of sense. While we are on the topic of motivations, the entire reason why Debbie wants to head into this plan straight out of prison is unclear. Does she want to keep a legacy going? Does she want to follow her brother's footsteps? Does she think that a simple life is not probable for her? We might never know unless they make a sequel.
The film, however, was still enjoyable to watch. Even though some of the characters are one dimensional, the chemistry they have with each other is charming. All of them are smart and witty and watching them together is good fun. It's just that the story isn't all that interesting.
Overall,
Oceans 8 offers nothing new that the first Oceans movie didn't already yield us, but gives us a good time anyway due to the all-female cast and their chemistry.
6.8/10
