Truth or Dare

Truth or Dare is about a group of college friends that decide to spend their spring break in Mexico. When Olivia, one of the group members, persuades the group into following a random guy she just met, they end up at an abandoned church where they start a game of truth or dare. The game takes a dark turn when random guy informs Oliva of the peril that she and her friends will face now that they are in the game. When they return to school, Olivia is the first to experience the demonic aspects of the game and as the other friends experience it as well, they try to beat the game and the story goes on from there.
Truth or Dare Poster       My initial attitude going into this movie was apathetic, but slightly curious because people were saying that it fell into the "so bad its good" category of films. They're not wrong. Remeber Happy Death Day and how it was somewhat better than people thought it was going to be? It's kinda like this movie, except worse than everyone thought it was going to be. Both are made by Blumhouse productions so people who liked Happy Death Day probably had hopes for Truth or Dare.
I'll start off with what I didn't like: the execution. The premise of a haunted "spin the bottle" type game sounds like it would make for an okay film, but it kinda reminds me too much of Ouija and we all know how that movie turned out. Also, the writing. From the dialogue to the inconsistency with certain characters, its all just lazy and incredibly cheesy. I mean, like, extremely cheesy. I wanted to sink into my chair because someone said: "let's get this party started." Another thing was the characters. Some of the decisions they make are just horrible like WALKING INTO A ROOM AFTER YOU SAW THE DOOR OPEN BY ITSELF. You know, just stuff like that. A lot of the bad things that happen in the movie only happen because someone decided to do something stupid like have a quick make-out session before someones about to die or say stupid things that the game uses against them, or Olivia and Markie constantly being in a petty fight for the whole movie instead of working on their issues. Also, the characters show no emotional weight when one of their friends die. They cry about it for 2 seconds and then they move on as if they aren't suffering and then the dead characters never get mentioned again. I could probably go on and on with my issues, but in the end, this whole movie can be summed up by one phrase: slumber party.
Yes, despite the horrible writing and the complete flip-flop of morals for certain characters, this was pretty fun and humorous to watch. It does fall into the "so bad its good" genre, but just barely. If I were at a slumber party and me and my friends were deciding what movie to watch, I would definitely choose Truth or Dare because it has that personality about it. All the bad characteristics are what give this film its two redeeming qualities: its good level of rewatchability and its unintended humor.
Overall, Truth or Dare is an unintentionally funny movie with not much going for it, other than the fact that it serves as a solid entry in the "sleepover movie" genre. It is an experience that is best enjoyed with friends. You will laugh, but you will not cry. 4/10
