The concept was interesting enough and the trailers were pretty enticing so I had a certain mindset going in. I will say that this movie executes itself way differently than you are probably expecting it to. The score is haunting and features a battle drum that beats ever so slowly and also utilizes some strange violin and electronic sounds. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It's definitely one of the better movies to come out this year. It's an original screenplay and it's executed in an engaging, stylistic fashion. The performances from the two lead actresses are excellent, particularly from Olivia Cooke who plays Amanda. She nails the emotionally numb teenager and her chemistry with Anya-Taylor Joy's character is extremely entertaining to watch. The comedy of the film all comes from these two characters and their interacting personalities provide for some of the funniest moments on screen this year.
However, the stylistic nature of the film brings about some problems. Both on-screen action and dialogue go forward at a drooling pace and, as a result, forces you to wait for basically half of the screen time. Every conversation in this movie is 50 percent talking and 50 percent silence and staring. It gets a bit awkward at times, but the total movie run time is only 90 minutes so you will survive. Also, this movie is obsessed with long takes. This movie loves to make you stare at something for longer than needed whether its a shot of someone walking or people staring at each other. It doesn't work every time.
Overall, Thoroughbreds is a fun, stylistic movie with enough wit and chemistry to keep you entertained, despite its drudging pace from time to time. 7.5/10
