A Wrinkle in Tme

A Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid and Oprah Winfrey and is about a girl, Meg who, after 4 years, stills mourns the strange disappearance of her scientist father. When 3 strange women appear in her backyard, she embarks on a journey to find her father and help keep a dark force at bay.
From the trailers, this movie didn't look like it was going to be great. I heard a lot of people comparing it to the box office impact that Tomorrowland, another Disney film, had. That movie looked alright from the trailers, but when it released, critics called it a misfire and said that it could've been much better. That same thing basically happened here with A Wrinkle in Time. I thought it was a pretty okay movie, but I do think that it was a huge misfire.
Image result for a wrinkle in time      First off, the CGI. There are some moments in the film that are visually stunning, but unfortunately, there are a lot more moments where the CGI just looked terrible. This is pretty shocking considering it's a big budget Disney production. I'm sure most of the budget went to hiring Oprah in the movie lol. The acting is also flawed as well. Most of the actors are fine. Storm Reid definitely has a future in acting. However, The acting done for the character of Charles Wallace is almost always cringe-worthy and just outright bad. You're probably mentally telling me that I shouldn't be so harsh since it is a kid's movie and that child actors can somewhat be forgiven, but for me personally, I couldn't get past it. Also, there are some plot holes that the film kinda glosses over. I won't go over what they were, but I should probably read the book if I want answers.
I did, however, love the first 20 or so minutes of the movie. The emotions and the sentimentality are handled pretty well. Its when the 3 women show up that the movie starts to forget its more human themed focuses and it starts to feel more commercial. It'll remind you of the 2011 Alice in Wonderland more times than you'll think. Another thing I liked was how well it fleshed out some of the side characters. People like Veronica, Meg's bully, and Calvin get there own backstories and it ties in pretty well to the story and to the main villain in a way. The parents of Meg and their backstory is also handled with care. Really, it's only the character of Charles Wallace and the 3 women that don't get a lot of explanation, especially Wallace considering how important he proves to be later in the movie.
Overall, A Wrinkle in Time is an unbalanced life lesson movie that teaches kids to love who they are as it loses its focus about a third of the way in. It's visually pleasing at some moments, but it starts to get noticeably worse as the film progresses. I'm sure younger generations will have a great time with this movie, but for me as an adult, it doesn't really work. 5.5/10
