A Madea Family Funeral

Oh jeez. Lemme break it down for you guys. I have a subscription to MoviePass and I was looking at what movies were available today. Movie availability is complex and I won't get into it here, but just know that this movie was on there and since I've only used my MoviePass once since the beginning of the year I decided to use it on this movie. The only other option was Alita: Battle Angel and I had already seen that. My thought process was this: I have to experience the bad in order to appreciate the good. So, with that in mind, I got a ticket to A Madea Family Funeral. Needless to say, it didn't go so well.
Image result for tyler perry's a madea family funeral   I'll start by pointing out the very few aspects of this movie that weren't completely terrible. The humor is mostly unachieved, but the few moments where I found myself making the slightest chuckle always came from the elderly banter of Madea and her friends. They got chemistry, but it isn't fully realized and I'll explain that later. The only other thing that deserves credit is the finale. The whole time you're watching the movie you're sort of sucked into the family drama and I found myself slowly growing anticipation for how all the secrets were going to burst. Once that finally happened, I felt relieved. Mostly because I knew it meant the movie was ending soon, but also because it had an ounce of a redeeming feeling to it.
These small qualities, however, don't make up for the atrocity that is the rest of the film. If I were to edit out all the overly drawn out scenes where Madea is talking to her elderly friends about something that isn't plot-relevant then I would be left with about 20 minutes of content. Over half of what you're going to watch is Madea and banter. They should've named this movie "Madea and Her Friends Crack Jokes for 90 Minutes and Someone Dies." You guys probably think I'm exaggerating, but I'm begging you to believe me. I didn't watch this movie. You know what I did? I endured this movie. I could honestly write a dissertation on everything that I didn't like about this movie, but I'm not going to and you know why? Solely because this is the only Madea movie I have ever seen. I haven't seen any of the other ones and probably never will but hear me out. If there are tropes or certain longtime traditions of the franchise that I'm not familiar with then I can't blame the movie for how it executed itself. Maybe this movie has a cult following and I'm sure those fans will be satisfied.
You already know what I'm going to say. This movie is just not worth the ticket price, not worth the dollar theater price, and not even worth the Redbox price. Just remember that you have to acknowledge the bad in order to enjoy the pleasant moments. Maybe the first Madea film was just like this one and if that's the case then it’s time to hang up the wig my friend. 0.5/10
