The Meg

The Meg is about a group of marine biologists who, on a dangerous expedition to explore the deepest depths of the Mariana Trench, discover that a horrifying creature that was previously thought to be extinct for over 2 million years still lurks the oceans of the earth. The explorers unknowingly provoke the creature and release it into the world to wreak mayhem.
Just by watching the trailer, you know that this is basically a Jaws remake, except with a little more sci-fi elements.
I was really hoping that this movie was gonna be just a cheesy one-liner fest and it delivers on that. The film doesn't take itself seriously because it knows exactly what it is. This results in an enjoyable way to spend an hour and forty minutes. It's not a spectacular movie in any way, but we all have guilty pleasures and this film, for me, might be my new guilty pleasure.
Image result for the meg       However, there is a lot wrong with this movie and I'll start with the incoherent plot. Looking back on the movie, it feels like the writers had a number of different story ideas when they were thinking of a Jaws remake and, by the end, couldn't bear to part with any of them. The solution? Mush them all together and hope it works. It's like a throwing knife. They threw to see if it would stick and it does, but not deeply. One knock on the wall and that knife is falling out. There are moments of confusion because of this. 20 minutes into the film and they find a solution to a problem and I was like "wait, what? its only been 20 minutes guys. Wheres the film going now?" This happened to me two times throughout the film. Also, the dialogue is sometimes lazy. If I may, I would like to quote my favorite line from the film and excuse me if I get it wrong:

"This thing has already proven to be extremely aggressive to boats"

Other than that, the film is a good way to waste 100 minutes if you're just looking for something not too thought-provoking. Not that mindless films are bad. They certainly have a place in the film industry. This film is good and, let's be honest, who doesn't want to watch Jason Statham take on a gigantic shark by himself? 6/10
