Sorry To Bother You

I just got back from the theater. It is 1am on Friday the 13th of July and I am super tired, but I need to write down my thoughts before I start forgetting the details. This will probably get published later, but just know that my first draft was done right after the movie at 1:30 in the morning.
Anyway, the movie in question for this review is titled Sorry To Bother You and is about a poverty-stricken individual who lands a job as a telemarketer. He works his days away as his co-workers form a union strike to attain more pay. He comes upon a moral crossroads when he suddenly gets a huge promotion. As he works on the next floor up, he starts to unravel the curiosities and the complexities of the company he works for while at the same time struggling to maintain relationships with his union friends. After landing the promotion, things start to spiral into craziness.
Image result for Sorry to bother you       If you want to experience this film the way I did, go into it with an open mind. It turns out to be something unique and wildly original. Boots Riley, the writer and director, has given us a film that will be talked about for a while, or, at least until the next Oscars. However, I don't think it's going to resonate with everybody. Like, I'm predicting "Mother!" levels of divisiveness. You're probably wondering how a movie with such a tame story could possibly have those kinds of reactions. Please trust me. Just go see the film yourself.
It isn't a flawless movie though. I really only have a couple of issues with this movie. One thing I didn't like was the character of Salvador. I found him to be completely useless. He didn't do much for the story and could've been removed without hurting the film. One other thing that I found to be troublesome was the story itself. I won't say anything other than the telemarketer stuff, but once the movie introduces more elements to it, it has a hard time staying grounded in what it wants to do. It's a story that's all over the place and once you get towards the end, you'll look back at the movie as a whole and see that it's almost too crazy for its own good.
However, there is so much that I liked about this film. Its incredibly original and will no doubt keep you interested until the credits roll. If you don't find it that interesting then that's fine, but I implore you to have an open mind if you're interested in seeing it. It's a thought-provoking film and it's definitely worth your time. 9.5/10
